 | From Palamos, you reach Sant Feliu de Guixols, the most southern town of the middle Costa Brava, after about 20 km on a well-developed coast road above Platja d'Aro und S'Agarò. This is where the coast of Baix Empordà ends. In southerly direction the panoramic road to Tossa de Mar and the other well known tourist centers at the lower Costa Brava (Comarca La Selva) follows.
According to historical information, already about 400 BC on the hills above the present town has been a first iberic settlement which was converted to christianity about 700 years later under the western roman emperor Maximilian. A central role had Felix from Africa, a legionary in the army of Maximilian who later was revered as christian martyr and catholic saint and who became the patron saint and after whom the catalan town was named. The addition "de Guixols" is attributed to the surrounding hills where the original iberic settlement was situated.
Since the foundation of a benedictine monastery in the 10th century, which attracted more and more settlers, the growing town around the monastery got increasing economical importance during the middle ages, which first of all depended on fishing and the related branches of trade like fish processing, net-knotting and boat building. During the 18th and 19th century the cork extraction was added and finally became the main branch and Sant Feliu bacame the most important international distributor for the cork extracted in the surrounding cork-woods. Today, the town shows up it's on a wide basis grown prosparity with a lot of historical places of interest and some gorgeous manisons of exquisite quality in the typical catalanic style along the famous promenade (Passeio).
The rise to the elegant seaside resort was finally managed through wise and careful development politics in the 2nd half of the 20th century. While numerous other regions of the spanish coasts abandoned themself to the building boom of the 1960s and the 1970s and by that surrendered themself with all political consequences to the package tourism, Sant Feliu remained in the expansion of its accommodations and dining options from the beginning focused on moderate attendance. In this way Sant Feliu is still an insider tip, not least expecially for wealthy Catalans from Barcelona and other regions of the country which make short trips here multiple times a year or have their holiday homes on the hills above the town.
Exactly here, on the surrounding hills above the town, where the sparse cork oak woods spend shadow and people always felt comfortable, our residential areas Bell-Lloc, Font Picant and St. Miquel are situated. Situated about 8 km in front of the coast line, people have the privilege to have multiple beaches with very senic varied charme in the next neighborhood, under it, of course, the unique sandy beach of San Feliu:
A wonderful, fine granulated sandy beach in the semicircular bay of about 400 m length and over 30 m width, at one end bordered by bizarr cliffs, on the other end by the biggest sports port of the Baix Empordà with it's proud sailing and motor yachts. On the landside a unusual wide, gorgeous and constructed as park-like boulevard promenade follows with elegant shops, cafes and other gastronomic institutions. That's where the central parking area is situated. The real historic center with it's alive Ramblas (boulevards), the market, the small alleys, museums and historical architectural heritages is mostly closed for car traffic for environmental protection.
Of course, you will find many cultural attracions in Sant Feliu and surroundings alongside a wide selection
of sports and leisure facilities. And halfway between the beach and our cottages also very beautiful in the hills above the city with 18 holes situated, the golf course near Santa Cristina d'Aro.
